The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is an independent statutory agency. Their role is to implement the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which will support a better life for hundreds of thousands of Australians with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers.

The best way to assess your eligibility for the scheme is to review these NDIS eligibility

Once you know that you or the person in your care can access the NDIS, you will be contacted by a NDIA Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to have an NDIS planning meeting. This will either be over the phone or in person.

They will talk with you about:
  • Your goals or goals for the person in your care
  • Supports you or they may have now
  • Things you need because of your or their disability to reach identified goals.
  • After the planning meeting, the NDIA will put the plan together and send it to you

People over the age of 65 are not eligible for the NDIS. BUT those who are over 65 and currently receiving disability support will be provided with the same supports and funding that they received prior to the transition to the NDIS.

If you are not able to use public transport because of your disability, you may be able to get NDIS funding to cover transport such as taxis.

If you previously received funding through a taxi subsidy scheme, the NDIA will also take this into account. The NDIS will not provide funding to carers or family members to transport a person with a disability to everyday commitments. The NDIS can also fund supports that help you build confidence and learn how to travel or use public transport independently. For example, if your goal is to get your driver’s licence, the NDIS may be able to support you to achieve this.

The NDIS provides funding to eligible people based on their individual needs. Every NDIS participant has an individual plan that lists their goals and the funding they have received. NDIS participants use their funding to purchase supports and services that will help them pursue their goals.

Everyone has different goals but they could include things like getting and keeping a job, making friends or participating in a local community activity. NDIS participants control the support they receive, when they receive it, and who provides it.
